Every few weeks they bring around a snack cart at Capital One. In the US office, it’s usually some candy or maybe a small bag of chips. It’s always a welcome treat for the team, but it’s truly a snack cart.
Today I experienced Indian snack cart, which has a whole new meaning! It’s like a buffet! They wheeled in this huge setup and served:
- Panipuri – a round, hollow, fried crisp filled with a mixture of water, tamarind, chili, chaat masala, potato, onion and chickpeas. We couldn’t have this since the water in it wasn’t mineral water, but our friends told us where to find one that was. Will try later.
- Samosa Chaat – chaat is a savory snack food, typically served on street carts. It’s a term that refers to a particular topping that you put on other foods. I think the chaat topping is usually different sauces or yogurt, little fried crispies, and spices. Today the chaat was put over samosas (a fried pastry with savory filling, usually either potato, onions, lentils, or sometimes meat, etc ), so it’s samosa chaat!
- A fried bread thing that was filled with spices (not sure what it was called, but good)
- A northern Indian dessert (didn’t catch the name). It’s the orange thing in the picture below. It’s really sugary and delicious!
- Rose milk
This was a fun (and tasty) experience! Brent and I are having dinner with Taha tonight, so we just tasted a little of everything so that we wouldn’t ruin our appetites. But apparently they do this twice a month, so there are plenty more snack cart adventures to come. Next time we won’t eat lunch!
The "snack cart" (aka, full buffet!)
The whole office came running
Upper left is samosa chaat, the orange thing is the dessert, and the other is the fried item (that I don't know the name for) torn in half
